New comers should start from the basics .They should learn the meaning of each and every term used and also in addition those factors that can affect his/her selection.

    Web Host

Web host refers to a computer connected to the internet. Web host can also be termed as ‘web server’. The computer that is playing the role of the web server needs to be more powerful than normal PCs and the function of this web server is to serve up websites.

The website content of the user will remain will on this computer, so as the people who are surfing on the internet can get a way to access his/her website.

There can be three main categories in which the web host can be classified based on the economic factor and common features:

    1. Free Hosts:

The users who are not professional but are making website only as a hobby then for them free hosting can be a good option. In free hosting space, bandwidth and other features provided are very limited. With free web hosting one can not only make his/her website successful but is also suitable for personal websites or for temporary usage. Generally free hosting enforces pop-up, text or banner ads. Reliability, best performance and customer support lacks in case of free hosting as well. When a user registers for a free host then the word free host gets added with the user’s domain name that gives an adverse effect in the eye of the visitors.

    2. Shared Hosts:

The next type of the web hosting to be discussed is shared hosting. This hosting service is used by many of the web sites .This type of hosting service is Suitable for personal, small and medium businesses. This service can be used by paying $1 to $25 per month. The features provided by this service vary from very limited space/bandwidth to semi-dedicated servers. The users host their website by this type of hosting service and it has its own top level domain facility. No doubt that shared web hosting is quite better than free hosting but still it does not provide 100% satisfactory services. In case of shared hosting one server is shared by the number of websites so its performance and availability gets affected. More websites usually means less performance. If less number of websites are hosted by one server then it will be more expensive, but in this case there are more chances of reliability. There are many companies allowing customers to host multiple websites with different domains under a single account.

    3. Dedicated Hosts:

The next type of hosting is dedicated hosting. This type of hosting is most reliable hosting. In this type of hosting a full server is dedicated to a single customer. Generally this type of hosting is used by large businesses, professionals and very active websites dealing with thousands of visitors daily. The customers having dedicated hosting can have their total control over the server as well as able to create as many websites as they like. Customers can run their own hosting company on a rented dedicated server. Payment module is mentioned according to specifications and services provided with the server, which varies from $100 up to about $800 dollars per month.

    4. Collocated Hosts:

Now the other type of hosting service to be discussed is collocated hosting. This service is very much similar to dedicated hosting. The difference between collocated hosting and dedicated hosting is that in collocated hosting the customer owns the server hardware instead of renting it. In this service the server will be placed in provider’s data center. This service is more expensive than dedicated hosting.

    5. Reseller Hosts:

In reseller hosting the providers offers web server storage to their customers, and resells the web server storage to them. Generally providers offer resellers a discount price.

    6. Other Hosts:

Including the above type of hosts there are also many other hosts such as email hosts, media hosts, data hosts, etc but these hosts will not be discussed in this article.

    Domain Name

Domain name is the name which shows the place where one’s website is located. The actual address of the website is a set of numbers. Each and every web server has its own unique address. Domain name indicates the real addresses of every websites. One can easily remember the domain name of any of the website. Remembering domain name is easier than recalling the IP addresses.

    Space / Storage

Space is one of the services provided by the web host. It plays a very important role in the website development. It happens many times that the customer requires more space but the host fails to provide it, so customer should be very careful while choosing the web host. Storage is the amount of web server’s disk space available for customer’s website files, images and databases. Space can be according to the requirement; it can be as small as 5MB in some free hosts and as big as 300GB for some dedicated servers. Earlier prices of the space were very high but prices reduced significantly during the last few years. The hosting plans offering 3GB of space for less than $10 a month can be easily available.

    Bandwidth

Bandwidth can be defined as the amount of data transferred from web server to clients’ internet browsers. When ever a person outlook a page the data is transmitted from the server to that person’ PC. If any one is having audio, video and images in his/her website then the bandwidth consumed is more in comparison of the website having only text contents. The bandwidth available in free hosting can be as low as 100MB per month where as in some dedicated servers the bandwidth available is as high as 2000GB a month. The customers who don’t want to pay more for bandwidth can easily find hosting plans offering 75GB of monthly data transfer for less than $10.

    Server Type

Generally server means the operating system than runs the web server. Some common types are Windows, Linux and UNIX. Server type refers the server side scripting and database types. The difference between Windows server and Linux/UNIX is that Windows runs ASP and ASP.NET with Access or SQL Server databases where as Linux/UNIX servers usually runs CGI, PHP or JSP with MySQL or Oracle databases. The other difference is that Windows servers are more expensive than Linux/UNIX servers.

    Databases

As server type is discussed earlier also, we are able to know that there are different types of databases available. The mostly used is MySQL as it is open source GPL (free) software and can serve a lot of online applications’ requirements such as forums, content management, mailing lists, etc. MySQL, rather its features are limited. MySQL is sufficient for small concern but it is not powerful for the complicated large business sites. Large business requires more powerful databases such as Oracle or SQL Server.

    .

    Server Side Scripting

Usually the new comers prefer to use PHP as server side scripting. The reason behind this is that there are hundreds of open source (GPL) PHP scripts that are able to fulfill the webmaster’s requirements. However PHP also has some limitations in features required by advanced websites same as in the case of MySQL, due to this limitation some professional web developers prefer to use ASP.NET or JSP. Some other developers still prefer to use Cold Fusion, CGI, ASP or PERL.

    Email

Now the next very important aspect to be talked about is Email. At present no one can move further in this computer world with having his/her Email account. The one who is planning to do any kind of activity through computer such as to run a business or to provide any kind of service, then the first thing he/she need to do is to open an Email account. There are many hosting plans that include the feature of having some email accounts with customer’s domain. The availability of number and size of email accounts totally depends on the hosting plan one opted. Generally this feature is not included in free hosting. Small plans provide only about 10 accounts where as big plans do not have the limited number. Usually those email accounts are web based and accessible through POP3 clients as well.

    File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

The other service is FTP. File Transfer Protocol is a usual way of transferring files across the Internet. Most of the webmasters used to upload and download their websites contents through FTP. The process of uploading or downloading is performed by using FTP client software. Webmasters require FTP username and password so as to access their web server. There are any hosts who use to provide more than one FTP account to their customers as per their requirement. Rather FTP is unspecified; it is not advisable as per the security reasons.

    Control Panel

Control panel is the service available by many of the web hosting companies to their customers. It is a web based application that helps in managing websites. Some important functions performed by the control panel are that it used to manage email accounts, providing statistics, managing FTP accounts, managing domains and sub-domains and managing databases. The control panel application that is mostly used by the user is cPanel. There are many companies who use to develop their own control panel application.

    Uptime

Now after having all the services, the thing of concern which remains is how the user keeps his/her website uptime most of the time. If anyone is having a website with excellent features but it remains down most of the time it will be of no use, as when ever the visitors visit his/her website and found it down then later on they will think twice before visiting it. In result he/she will suffer the loss of visitors. Uptime is very important feature of web hosts and that is usually measured in percentage. If a server remains down near about 30 minutes a day will have an uptime percentage of about 99.98%, which is acceptable for most small to medium business websites. If any of the business website is not having at least this percentage of uptime then that website is not suitable for a business website. Mission critical sites cannot tolerate frequent outages, thus they may use web monitoring services to notify web administrators immediately when an outage happens.

    Price

Finally the factor left is price. In this option also there is a great variability found like for example customer is having option to choose between the prices ranging from 0 to $1000 per month. For most personal, small and medium websites the total amount of cost involved is just $15 per month. Thus its not at all advisable for business website owners to select very cheap plans let say less than $5 because this price can lead to huge cost indirectly afterwards.

  • AT&T, United Telecommunications, Inc., Century Tel, Cincinnati Bell Telephone and Cox Communications are amongst the five major telephone companies in the US.

Here’s a brief summary of the five major telephone companies.

    AT&T Corporation

The tradition of AT&T sprang from the history of the first telephone created by Alexander Graham Bell.

In 1875, Thomas Sanders and Gardiner Hubbard agreed to invest in Alexander Graham Bell’s invention. The venture turned out well and Bell thrived in obtaining patents for his creation one year after. To further develop the discovery, the three partners then instituted the Bell Telephone Company in 1877.

Telephone exchanges then operated under the licensed name of the Bell Telephone Company. The following year, the earliest telephone exchanges was launched in New Haven, Connecticut. That initiated the succeeding telephone exchanges that would transpire in US’s key towns and metropolis. The company was given a new title, American Bell Telephone Company.

Western Electric Company became American Bell’s production entity in 1882. American Bell was able to acquire most of Western Electric’s licensees and the venture developed to be recognized as the Bell System.

It was in March 1885 that the AT& T Company was incorporated to be American Bell’s subsidiary. Having obtained the rights and assets of American Bell, the AT&T turned to be the Bell System’s parent company. In our day, AT&T today is a major international player in providing IP-based systems.

    United Telecommunications, Inc., (United Telecom)

The United Telecom spawned in 1892. Cleysen Brown attached a generator to the grain mill of his father, which eventually delivered electricity for Abilene, Kansas. After six years, he installed telephone cable on his electric posts, spreading out the small trade to other neighboring communities. In September 25, 1925, the young business was incorporated as the United Telephone & Electric Company. United Telephone had its share of acquisitions of some private telephone firms. However, United Telephone experienced corporate bankruptcy when Brown died in 1935.

In 1938, United Telephone was incorporated as United Utilities, Inc., together with Central Kansas Power and 7 telephone firms. In 1940s United Utilities developed into a holding company for independent telephone firms because of its several mergers.

United Utilities was given a new name in 1972, United Telecommunications Inc. United Telecom now has a number of subsidiaries in the US– United Telephone Co. of Kansas, United Telephone Co. of the Northwest, and United Telephone Co. of Minnesota-are among them.

    Cox

Cox Communications, Inc. is the United States’ third biggest telecommunications source. The company’s tradition of reliable service was born in 1898 when the former school teacher, James M. Cox instituted the Cox Enterprises, Inc., Cox Communications’ parent company. Cox was a three-term governor of Ohio and was a candidate for the U.S. presidency in 1920. Gov. Cox bought the Dayton Evening News, his first newspaper that same year.

Today, Cox Enterprises is serving almost 7 million subscribers and carries the yearly incomes that go beyond $10 billion. The company also earns massive interests in newspapers, radio, vehicles, and television auctions.

    Century Tel

Oak Ridge Telephone Company, owned by F.E. Hogan was the forerunner of Century telephone. Hogan sold Oak Ridge to the couple Marie and William Clarke Williams in 1930. It was a family-operated venture at first and in 1968 it became incorporated as Central Telephone and Electronics. That year, Oak Ridge Telephone Company was providing assistance to 3 states. Clarke M. Williams, the Williams’ son was the chairman and president.

The company has gotten its new name, CenturyTel, Inc. in 1999. CenturyTel multiplied in size through a number or acquisitions. In 1998, the company bought 19 exchanges and 89,000 access lines in northern Wisconsin regions from Ameritech. From 2000-2002, CenturyTel also acquired Verizon’s Alabama and Missouri assets. In 2006, over 52 percent of CenturyTel clients had the option of broadband cable telephone services while 19 percent had the option of Voice over Internet Protocol systems.

    Cincinnati Bell Telephone

Cincinnati Bell’s former name was The City and Suburban Telegraph Company. In July 5, 1873, it was formally incorporated to become Cincinnati Bell Telephone. Cincinnati Bell became Cincinnati’s first company to offer direct communication involving businesses and the residences of the city.

As the telephone was first operated in the city in 1877, the City and Suburban Association had around 50 exclusive telegraph cables between homes and offices. Clients were provided with a code manuscript and telegraph device, and men operators would run foot treadles to power the call bells.

Obtaining a license, Bell Telephonic Exchange operated as Ohio’s first telephonic exchange and the country’s 10th. The first directory was issued in 1879. Men operators were replaced by women who had to remember all the callers’ names. 1,000 clients were serviced by only 25 staff.

Cincinnati Bell Telephone nowadays offers forward-looking telecommunications services to Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

The technology world is a fun and ever changing world. Today, there are literally thousands of products in the marketplace. We are simply swarmed by the sheer number of products that we can choose from. And these are not big ticket items. They could be just small little gadgets like a mobile phone, a portable printer, or a digital camera.

Of course, if you have the budget, a seemingly small item may end up costing you a small fortune. When making a buying decision, you need to be discerning enough to strike a balance between the price and your own needs and wants. One way to achieve this balance, is to rely on technology news to help you come to a better decision.

How technology news can help you.

Make a quick visit to any technology news website. There are a plethora of tech sites out there on the Internet. Some are well established websites (think CNET), and others are run by small publishers. Both have their merits.

A big publisher usually releases tons of tech related news on all sorts of products. The problem is, due to the huge scope of coverage, the focus is usually diluted. You will find different types of content – reviews, product releases, specifications, etc. Some of these content are written by paid tech writers, so there is a commercial element involved. Perhaps some writers are more inclined to write positive things about the products? Maybe.

Smaller publishers tend to be more focused, and they usually release news on hand picked products only. Being small, they can’t possibly cover everything under the sun. So it’s a wise strategy to adopt. Often, you find articles that are much more in depth. The owners are also more likely to be very passionate about the tech products they are writing about.

When buying a tech gadget, you usually pay more for newer technology. The important here is to remember that everything new comes with a much heftier price tag. The technology may not be necessarily better (e.g. buggy since it’s new), but you still end up paying substantially more for the product anyway.

If you want to save some money, just be patient. Keep browsing the tech news to keep yourself abreast of the changes. For instance, how is the technology improving? What are others saying about the brand new gadget? If you read nothing but great reviews on the product, that is a good sign.

You may need to suppress your own desire a little, so that you don’t end up rushing to be the first in line to buy that new camcorder, new television, or new mobile phone. Just wait a little. The price will come down soon enough as soon as the masses start to adopt the new technology. That way, you get a more stable device, at a much lower price.

  • Software 30.09.2010 No Comments

In today’s world, most people own at least one computer at which they spend a great deal of personal and working time. By doing so, they are generating a lot of important data and using often expensive programs to perform various tasks. So what happens when the computer hard drive, the part of the computer that stores all this data and the programs, decides to “crash” or quit working? That can be very devastating to the computer owner when it happens, as you may have guessed already.

What precautions can a computer user take to avoid losing all of their important data and software in the off-chance that their system goes down? Computer professionals recommend that users regularly back up their data to an outside source. This can be to a portable digital device like a disk, a flash drive or a website designed specially for storing data securely. Likewise, software can be backed up as well and here are some suggestions on how to best go about doing this periodically.

    Keep a spare hard-drive

Some computers, including laptops, come with removable hard drives that can be exchanged with other removable hard drives. This can be especially convenient when you have to travel away from your business computer and need to carry with you all of your computer contents. But this can also be very useful when you back up your computer software and other large files that will probably be too large for a simple disk file or flash drive. Using the default windows backup process that your computer came with, you can install backups onto the removable hard drive and then keep it in a safe place just in case you ever need to restore these files to your exiting or another computer.

    Utilize a backup software

There are several reliable software products out there on the market that can make a copy of any software applications you are using on your computer, plus any files and store them securely on an outside and secure, web-based server. The software essentially makes a carbon copy of your entire hard drive that can be accessed if needed. This is less expensive than buying an actual backup hard drive as well. This type of software is often referred to as “PC Recovery” software. Be sure to review the different types available before settling on one that will work for you.

    Company servers

If you are using a computer at your employers, chances are it is already connected to a central server. Any programs you download will also be copied to that server, including any files or work you process on your computer. In the case of a system crash, the IT administrators for your company can pull up your data and software and restore it to your new or repaired computer easily.

It is always a good idea to get in the habit of backing up your data on a regular basis. Use your windows operating system backup function to do this or follow the instructions set forth by your company IT department.

  • Mobile computing has been a hot topic lately with so many advances in chip architecture and power efficiency. Laptops have long been the standard for mobile users, but there is another form factor type that has been on the market for some time that deserves a little more recognition. Sometimes a laptop can be unwieldy and awkward to handle. In situations where opening up a laptop isn’t an option, tablet PCs get the job done in a much more inconspicuous way.

The term tablet PCs is a general description for any mobile computer that is designed to be controlled with your fingers or a pen device that is touched directly to the screen surface. There are a few different styles of tablet PCs; some of which have keyboards and others not, both having their own strengths and weaknesses.

    ·Convertible tablet PCs

    * Offers the flexibility of a full keyboard
    * Screen rotates 180 degrees and lays flat against keyboard for tablet PC operation
    * Rotating screen connection tends to be very weak and easy to break

    ·Slate tablet PCs

    * Has no attached keyboard
    * External keyboard can be attached via Bluetooth or USB
    * Very thin and light compared to other styles

    ·Hybrid tablet PCs

    * Offers flexibility of a full keyboard
    * Screen detaches from keyboard and/or slides away
    * More sturdy than convertible screen attachment

Most major manufacturers offer some version of the tablet PC form factor. Gateway, Lenovo, HP, Dell, Toshiba, Fujitsu, ASUS and Sony all have very competitive products to offer.

Here are two examples of popular tablet PCs that do their job very nicely:

    Lenovo Thinkpad X61

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo L7500

    • Display Size (inches): 12.1 • Wide Screen: No • Total HD Size (GB): 120 • Min. Weight (lbs.): 4.0 • Price (at time of review): $1800

This convertible style model is a great choice for business people who are finding themselves in need of computing power on the fly. Equipped with 2 GB RAM and the always necessary built in Wi-Fi card, this machine will handle document review/creation, data processing as well as VoIP calls very efficiently

    Sony VAIO VGN-UX390N

CPU: Intel Core 2 Solo U2200

    • Display Size (inches): 4.5 • Wide Screen: Yes • Total HD Size (GB): 32 • Min. Weight (lbs.): 1.0 • Price (at time of review): $2200

Truly a genius invention, this tablet is considered a hybrid and is one of the most powerful machines you will find for its size. Fitting comfortably into your hands, it offers a slide up screen that reveals a full qwerty keyboard. Supplied with a stylus, this tablet PC gives you full computer access that almost fits in your pocket. 1 GB of RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth and a cell phone SIM card slot mean you can take it almost anywhere and have access to your data.

Because of their inherent small chassis and light weight design, tablet PCs can be expected to offer performance more or less on par with ultraportable models. Don’t think you will be able to do video processing or run any killer apps on these machines, but if what you are looking for is sleek, discrete access to your computer, tablet PCs might just be your match.

  • Wholesale electronics is hot. In fact, this set of keywords is becoming more popular, increasing in terms of the number of times it is being used as a search term on Google, Yahoo! and Bing every month. Some of the popular search results that the search engines return include discount electronics that are mainly manufactured in China, the world’s largest manufacturer of electronic items.

Gadget entrepreneurs take advantage of sourcing their products from China. The reason for this is mainly that China is home to some of the best electronic items such as digital cameras, MP3 players, mobile phones, digital cameras, digital camcorders, LCD TVs and even computers. Online powersellers such as those who sell electronics on eBay or through traditional stores know that to get the best out of selling gadgets, buying wholesale electronics from Chinese manufacturers and distributors is the way to go.

To take advantage of the great profit opportunity that discount electronics offer, you should know first if there is enough demands for any of the gadgets that you would like to sell. To know if there are sufficient demands for, say “digital cameras”, you can use the many keyword tools out there. One such tool is Google Adword Keyword Tool. Once you’ve determined the volume of demands for the electronic items that you are looking to sell, you can start Googleing for Chinese electronics manufacturers.

To take advantage of electronics from China even more, it is recommended to purchase large quantities of wholesale electronics so you can get each item at a substantially reduced price. By doing so, you can even have greater profit margin per item.

  • Data loss has different meanings depending on who you are and what you lose and the overall cost of replacing data. For example if a computer programmer was to lose access to 7 years of his or her code the results could be quite damaging. Assuming the programmer is contracted for a corporate outfit then they will not pay for what they do not receive. The loss is the salary of the programmer, the loss for the company of the application; no one can go to the local computer store and buy their data to reinstall. Loss of an operating system with no user data is not a costly data loss; the system can be restored from the operating system CD in a few hours or an Image file in just a few minutes.

It is not just businesses who lose data; data loss can affect anyone who does not back up their data and test the backups regularly. Most modern households own at least one digital camera, these units use small storage devices storing the data (Photographs), the photographs could be parental baby / children growing up.
