  • Mobile Cell Phone History – Communication Technology

    Children today consider wireless phones as necessary and usual in daily life. They don’t know a time without them being prevalent. But that was not the case in 1973 when Martin Cooper made his first cellular phone call from a New York City street and New Yorkers stared gaping at him. But the history of cell phone starts further back in time.


    The history of cell phones or wireless communications must start with Samuel Morse. He introduced the concept of wireless by conduction when he transmitted a telegraph signal through water. His telegraph was the first device to transmit messages by electricity.


    Then in 1843 a man by the name of Michael Faraday studied to see if space could conduct electricity. In 1865 a dentist, Dr. Mahlon Loomis was the first person to communicate through wireless via the atmosphere. He came up with the idea of transmitting and receiving messages using the atmosphere as a conductor and sending up kites covered with copper screens that were linked to the ground with copper wires. Loomis was awarded a $50,000 research grant by congress.


    But let us move forward to the twentieth century and the invention of the cell or wireless phone as we know it today. This brings us to a man often referred to as the father of the cell phone, Martin Cooper. He was employed by Motorola and worked on developing the first hand held radios made for the Chicago police department in 1967. He then went on to lead Motorola’s cellular research.


    AT&T’s, Bell Laboratories introduced the idea of cellular communication in 1947. Through the 60′ and 70′s Motorola and Bell Laboratories were in a race to incorporate the technology into portable devices.


    On April 3, 1973 Martin Cooper won the race when he placed the first cell phone call to his rival at AT&T. Motorola introduced the 16-ounce “DynaTAC” phone into commercial service in 1983, at a cost to the consumer of $3,500. It weighed 2.5 lbs. took 10 hours to charge with 35 minutes of talk time. Features were limited to dial, listen and talk. This was commonly referred to as the Brick.


    In 1977 cell phones went public. Chicago was the first city to trial cell phones with 2000 customers.


    In 1983 Motorola, with the help of Martin Cooper, introduced the 16-ounce “DynaTAC” the first truly portable cellular phone. This phone took 15 years and a cost of over 100 million dollars to come to market. The cost to the consumer was $3500. It weighed 2.5 lbs., took 10 hours to charge and allowed 35 minutes of talk time. Features were limited to dial, listen and talk.


    From 1983 to the late 1980″s 1st generation cellular or car phones as they were often called became very popular. Most were not hand held but rather installed in cars or bag phones.


    In 1988 the CTIA (Cellular Technology Industry Association) was founded.


    In the early 1990′s second generation or 2G phones came onto the market. They were able to work on GSM, TDMA, and CDMA technology. 2G digital networks were online and replacing the analog network frequencies making them virtually obsolete. The phones became much smaller and portable and usage soared.


    Currently third generation or 3G phones are the technology available today. 3G phones include innovations that allow them to receive more than just phone calls. For example Internet access and email capability and streaming video.


    In December 2005 the wireless industry in the US surpassed the 200 million subscriber mark. In 2006 that number grew to 233 million subscribers with 12.8% of households being totally wireless. There are 195,613 cell sites making this possible.

Putting both packages together brings the system leaps and bounds in front of other console systems. Suddenly we are doing so much more with graphics technology.

    Despite the introduction of more and more games, there seem to be few that have the impact that the original Wii Sports package has had. Not that the situation will not change. Technology continues to develop and carry the Wii momentum forward as a greater depth of character emerges. In the meantime, one of the greatest features of the Wii is they physical interaction accompanied by the competitive determination that many players have to beat one another. Even as you read this, you can guarantee members of my family are battling away to prove the have the best brain of the bunch! They even phone each other to declare their latest score! Technology has driven the games industry for a long time with new games always trying to keep ahead of the competition.

    As time goes on we will probably start seeing less of a distinction between consoles and PCs as the price of technology continues to drop and consoles continue to become more and more powerful and able to compete with the more expensive computers. My guess is it won’t be long before we find ourselves freely moving around the room “shooting” each other in a way that goes far beyond laser shooting.

    Having said all of that though, then just focusing on Wii console games might be limiting our vision. Why? Simply because the Wii can go far beyond games and be turned into a real entertainment system providing music, movies and tv shows.   • PC games vs Console Games, the on-going war!

    While some gamers prefer to use their PCs for their video games, others are die-hard console fans, so much that even selecting which console has superiority to all others is seen as an even bigger debate!

    Why these differences of opinion? Several reasons, including:

    1. Availability of games. Until recently, many games were available only on one platform or the other. This has changed a bit in recent years, although there can still be minor differences in game play when looking at different versions of the video game.

    2. Cost of consoles. While computers can cost upwards of thousands of dollars – especially for specialised, high-end gaming systems – many gamers who prefer their games on PC cite the ability to purchase one system which lasts a number of years as one reason they would rather play their video games on a computer. Additionally, computers have the ability to be backwards-compatible: there’s no need to replace old games as your system grows more sophisticated, whereas with consoles certain games will only be available from certain brands. Also the high cost of newer consoles, despite their many features, is another discouraging factor for some users.

    3. System optimisation. Even though there are computers which are optimised for game play, including high-speed graphics processors and game-specific interface devices, console gamers feel that the systems available for their console games are able to provide a greater gaming pleasure over PC systems.      Mobile computing will never be the same with the advent of Seamless Wi-Fi’s S-Gen UMPC, or Ultra Mobile Personal Computer.  In an era when computer manufacturers are developing smaller PC solutions to meet the nomadic nature of today’s consumers, the S-Gen stands out as one of the most robust, yet smallest, micro PC’s available on the market.      Ultra mobile is a bit of an understatement.  The S-Gen weighs a mere 16 ounces and measures in with a length of 6.5 inches, a width of 3.8 inches, and a depth of 1.25 inches.  Despite its diminutive size, this “pocket” PC comes complete with a near full size keyboard, TFT touch screen display, and 20 GB hard drive.  Of course, it also has all of the bells and whistles of other mobile products, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular wireless technology.  Maybe surprising to some would be the fact that the S-Gen also features an integrated GPS system with internal antennae.

    Of course, being able to map your location and see your destination is only useful if you have enough battery power to get you through to the end of your trip.  Fear not, the Seamless Wi-Fi S-Gen has a battery life in excess of 8 hours.  That is roughly 4 times longer than traditional laptop battery life and double the endurance of higher capacity notebook batteries.  When you consider just how many functions the S-Gen is capable of, you will realize that you need every bit of those 8 hours.  The S-Gen is essentially a tri-band cell phone, MP3 player, GPS navigation system, and mobile computer all wrapped up into one very portable package.

    The S-Gen is so power-packed that it has been featured in PC Magazine, Laptop Magazine, The Mercury News, and The New York Post.  Let’s not forget the S-Gen’s reviews on DL.TV, Geekzone, and ZDNet just to name a few.  All of this positive publicity can only strengthen Seamless Wi-Fi’s sales numbers when the S-Gen officially launches on July 1, 2008.  The estimated retail price is $1,195, a very reasonable value when you consider the four or five devices that this unit will replace when you purchase it.
